Math Placement Information

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) is committed to continuing the journey toward college and career readiness offered by the Common Core State Standards for each of our students. We embrace the significant challenges and will work as a team to promote student success.

The purpose of this letter is to outline the placement assessments that will be used as the primary identification criteria for recommended course level assignments. The assessments include mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA). Below is a brief description of some particulars you’ll need to know:

● Public school students will be administered the Math and ELA assessments in May in their 6th grade class after the state mandated test, the Smarter Balanced Assessments.

● All other students will be administered the Math and ELA assessments in May at the SBUSD office. The date and times will be posted on the SBUSD web page.

● All assessments will be scored via a common rubric by May 22, 2015.

● Results and course level recommendations will be forwarded to the parent/guardian by the home school after May 29, 2015.

● All placement assessments administered after May will be conducted at the junior high school of the student.
