Principal's Message for March 4, 2016

Principal Message: David L. Ortiz

California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS): Please complete: URGENT!

Parents, please take a few minutes to complete the California Healthy Kids Parent Survey (CHKS). It is due March 11, 2016.

The purpose of the parent survey is to obtain parent perceptions of school climate as they relate to student well-being, opportunities, and learning. The survey is a companion to the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), a comprehensive student health risk and resilience assessment tool which was recently administered to our students.

The Parent Survey is anonymous and parent/guardian participation is voluntary. However, our goal is to have 285 parents complete the survey. Please help us reach our goal!

Naviance Class Enrollment: As part of the Santa Barbara Unified School District's continued effort to improve a family’s understanding of the course selection process  we are introducing a new system called NAVIANCE.   This internet-based program will allow you and your child to see descriptions of every course, make course selections and monitor progress towards graduation.  You will receive more information about the NAVIANCE program from the district via email and postal mail. It is due to go “live” on March 7.

Bright Spots:

  • Rhea Kommerell: Rhea won first place in the Santa Barbara County Education Office Spelling Bee by correctly spelling “effervescent.” Rhea will now proceed to the 2016 State Junior High Spelling Bee. It will be held May 14 at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael.
  • Math Counts: Our La Colina team placed fourth place overall  in the Regional MathCounts Competition on February 27th. Rhea Kommerell placed 7th in the overall individual category and will be moving on to the State Competition (March). Andy Qin got first place for the individual portion and also got first place in a very intense countdown round. All ten of the members of Math Club did a wonderful job.
