Young Writer's Camp 2016, Summer at UCSB

Dear Parents,

South Coast Writing Project (SCWriP) at UCSB is proud to bring you Young Writers Camp this summer. Open to incoming 3-12 grade students (specific grades depend on the location), the camp’s aim is to help develop a community of young writers in our region and provide all students interested with access to the best and most inspiring writing instruction available.

What does the camp look like?

Fun Activities

Students are guided through exploring various creative writing genres, and engage in activities designed to inspire a wealth of material to write about, which may include walking field trips, guest author presentations, and other workshops. On the final day of camp, families are welcomed for a potluck celebration where writers read their published work from a camp anthology.

Academic Enrichment

The key to being a great writer starts with writing a lot, every day. Students will engage in daily journal writing, as well as a variety of daily directed writing activities in a broad spectrum of both fiction and non-fiction that may include poetry, narrative, expository, and other genres. They will learn how to peer mentor and develop a deeper sense of the writing process in writing workshops. Most importantly, they will come to view themselves as writers, developing a deeper confidence in their ability to write.

Structure

The camp will be divided into a 4-6 grade group and a 7-9 grade group. Each group of 20-25 students is led by two credentialed teachers who have gone through an intensive fellowship program at SCWriP to become experts in writing instruction. The small teacher to student ratio ensures ample individual attention.

When and where is the camp?

The camp is in four locations this year: Buellton, Santa Barbara, Somis, and Thousand Oaks. See our website for specific locations, dates, and grade levels for each camp.

What does the camp cost?

An early bird registration rate of $275 is available through April 30. Regular registration is $295, and there is a discount for siblings. Partial scholarships are also available as part of the application process.
